Review | Mercato Famous Pizza: North vs South Italian

Easy to digest: Mercato Famous Pizza serves everyone’s favourite dish the Roman way.

Alessandro Settimi has a substantial argument when he wants to defend the honour of Roman pizza. It is much lighter, baked at ‘only’ 320 degrees for a minute longer than its Neapolitan cousin. Actually: all of Italy would eat Pizza the Roman way. Except for the Neapolitans.

And the Berliners, one might add. After all, there are at least a handful of excellent Neapolitan pizza parlours in the city (Standard, Futura, Malafemmena…). Meanwhile, a real craft Pizza Romana is still hard to find in Berlin. Until Alessandro Settimi came along, that is. His pizza isn’t soft-doughy, not crisp and crusty, but has a rather amazing, elastic bite and none of the roasty-toasty aromatic burnt bits that put some off the Neapolitan kind.

And indeed, this pizza is easy (easier) to digest. Even better: it was topped with convincing ingredients (despite Standard or Futura putting a bit more effort into their research of special local or South Italian producers).

Our only criticism concerns the atmosphere in the shop. The fake wood veneer counter, the Fritz Cola fridge right next to the entrance. Mercato Famous Pizza doesn’t really distinguish itself from the mediocre hospitality monotony of Danziger Straße. And the name seems also potentially copied from Standard Serious Pizza. But if we talk only pizza – and what else would you do when it comes to pizza? – then we’re quite sure this place tastes as if it will be one of the best pizzerias in town.
