We know what’s going on across Berlin’s club scene. This week: environmental conscience, NIMBYs, and the last open-air of the season.
No future on the dance floor
On September 20th, 22,000 people danced for the planet. About 90 clubs from Berlin and a few from Hamburg joined forces for the march against climate inaction and capitalism. The event, organised by the network Reclaim Club Culture, was connected to the worldwide climate strike taking place on the same day.
Not in my… club yard?
A few months ago, the clubs at Lichtenberg’s Wiesenweg, Polygon, Void and Kili, were threatened by an investor. But now it’s the neighbours‘ turn. 61 people have written 57 letters to politicians, claiming the clubs are too loud and that residents can’t get enough sleep. “The first legal complaints are being prepared”, the letter claims, alleging bodily assault perpetrated by Berlin’s authorities. It’s become unclear, however, whether it is actually legal to live on that plot at all. In a surprise twist of events, it has emerged that the area is declared a commercial building site. Sounds like a particularly bizarre case of “not in my backyard”. No answer yet from the clubs or authorities concerned.
The end of open-air season
CDJs, meaning DJs playing their sets with CDs, are up and coming. Yes, really. Catch a set on Satuday, October 12th at the last open-air of the season at Anomalie Art Club on Storkower Straße. After dark, the show continues inside with full-on techno. One of those on the decks will be D. Carbone, owner of the popular label Repitch, showing off his industrial-edged sounds.
