Beer, coffee, organic lemonade: The best Berlin lido you’ve never heard of

Is this still Berlin? It most definitely is: Strandbad Wendenschloss. (Photo: Strandbad Wendenschloss GmbH)

Wendenschloss, reborn. A group of young people took over an old lido and created one of the cosiest beer gardens in Berlin. Now, Köpenick boasts one of our favourite swimming spots in town.

In the end it all happened pretty fast — just a fresh lick of paint here and there, a bit of new furniture, a new fridge, a new beer tank, before, at the end of May, Köpenick’s lido opened its door once more. Just like pretty much every year since 2012. The only difference? Now, it’s not only a lido — it’s also a beer garden. And a very cosy one at that. Oh, and the door at the entrance vanished, too.

Yes, entry is now free, and the two new owners of the lido have given Köpenick something it’s been lacking for years: a culinary destination with a few well-made, honest dishes and friendly staff. And Czech tap beer that’s pretty much the perfect summer tipple.

Simple menu, great pleasures

The menu is small, well-thought out and never special for special’s sake. There are chips (obviously), and currywurst, there’s really nice tarte flambée, and a vegetarian dish of the week. There’s certified organic lemonade, coffee from the filter or the Italian espresso machine, not to mention the sweets and ice lollies — it’s a lido, after all. The plan is to be certified fully organic in a year or two. “This is becoming more and more important for our guests”, one of the owners, Florian Kawka, explains.

But the beautiful location itself is the star. And has already drawn interest: more than 40 weddings are already booked for next year. We’ll be back. For a swim, a wurst, or a wedding.

Address: Strandbad Wendenschloss, Möllhausenufer 30, Köpenick | daily 9am-7pm (during sunny days until 10pm)
