AGB: Berlin’s award-winning library is set to expand

What a beauty: the Amerika-Gedenk-Bibliothek (Photo: Vincent Mosch / ZLB).

Berlin’s state library makes contemporary education possible for everyone. Now it’s received an award for just that — and wants to grow even further.

Beautiful and simple, that’s the building of the Amerika-Gedenk-Bibliothek (AGB). The library is one of two sites comprising Berlin’s state library. But its stunning modernist architecture is not the reason the state library was recently named Germany’s library of the year. According to the awards ceremony, the library reacted to changes in society and in media by offering participative content and digital services. This way, it has become an important public forum in Berlin society. And, because the AGB is so popular, an extension is being planned — with the public invited to have their say on what it should look like.

Bibliothek findet Stadt: public participation process for the extension of the AGB, Forum Factory, Besselstraße 13-14, Kreuzberg | 18th+21st November, 17th January 2020, 4pm-8pm
