#CityNews: Tourists to be Berlin’s new garbage collectors?

Collecting garbage as a tourist experience? Two councils have come up with a rather creative idea for a cleaner city.

Tourists leave a lot of trash behind, right? Well, that’s what you might think. But thanks to a new initiative, the councils of Pankow and Mitte are turning things around. How? By offering tourists free city tours — with the added experience of collecting trash. The project is supposed not only to challenge the perception of tourists as responsible for trash on the streets. It’s also intended to encourage tidiness for the city as a whole. It’s in the mutual interest of residents and visitors, after all.

Currently, such park clean-up tours are planned for popular tourist hub Mauerpark and the far quieter Ernst-Thälmann-Park. The plan is for an hour of tourist trash collection, before participants are rewarded with a free picnic and can resume their vacation. So if you’re running low on ways to entertain visiting relatives, you might consider singing up for one of the fun clean-ups here.
