Berlin’s best coffee shops for early risers

How spoilt Berlin is with all its outstanding and innovative coffee roasteries – but not when you’re an early riser. Most coffee shops and cafés don’t open until nine or ten, not really work-friendly opening hours. But do not despair! We’ve rounded up our favourite coffee shops, roasteries and cafés for early birds like you.

Finally there’s more than decent coffee to be found at Alexanderplatz and Chausseestraße, for which we have to thank the Tres Cabezas-team. Their Alexanderplatz branch is located in the newly refurbished former mall, directly under the Brauhaus Mitte. They serve, in their own words, Bloody Good Coffee, and sandwiches on sourdough from everyone’s new favourite bakery, Albatross.

Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 13, Mitte | Open daily 9am-6pm

Directions: S- and U-Bahn station Alexanderplatz

Commonground

Friedrichshain’s Silo Coffee now has a big-little brother inside the stylish Circus Hotel at Mitte’s hip Rosenthaler Platz. The best bit: they serve coffee from 7.30am onwards, alongside their creative breakfast dishes, with beans from their own Fjord Coffee Roastery in Marzahn. Oh, there’s breakfast cocktails on the menu, too, if you crave a tipple in the morning.

Rosenthaler Straße 1, Mitte | Mon-Thu 7.30am-12-am, Fri 7.30am-2am, Sat 8.30am-2am, Sun 8.30am-12am

Directions: U-Bahn station Rosenthaler Platz

Companion Coffee

Companion Coffee delivers some great caffeine (photo © Luke Marshall Johnson)

With their little café in Kreuzberg’s Voo Store, Shawn Barber and Chris Onton managed to rouse Berlin’s coffee scene, before bringing decent tea to the city – and now you can have both at an employee-friendly early hour in their stylish café on Neukölln’s Weserstraße. Feel like you’ve heard this one before? Well of course, they are one of our favourite tea shops as well.

Weserstraße 166, Neukölln | Mon-Fri 8am-6pm, Sat+Sun 10am-6pm

Directions: Bus 104, M41, 166

Kaffee 9

A delicate whiff of coffee wafts across Eisenbahnstraße in Kreuzberg: Kaffee 9 is a wonderful place to sit by the window or on the wooden benches outside (with individual little tables!) and watch the world go by. And they always have a selection of delicious little pastries, sandwiches, and cakes for breakfast, too.

Eisenbahnstraße 42/43, inside Markthalle Neun, Kreuzberg | Mon-Wed+Fri 7.30am-6pm, Thu 7.30pm-9pm, Sat 7.30am-7pm, Sun 10am-6pm

Directions: U-Bahn station Görlitzer Bahnhof

Kaffeebar

Kreuzberg with a side of Australia: Kaffeebar on Graefestraße is so close to the canal that it would be a crime not to take your cup outside and start your morning counting the swans. But it’s also very cosy inside – for those colder winter days.

Graefestraße 8, Kreuzberg | Mon-Fri 7.30am-7pm, Sat+Sun 9.30am-7pm

Directions: U-Bahn station Schönleinstraße

Kaffeekirsche

Every day at 8am, Kaffeekirsche Roastery opens its gates on Kreuzkölln’s Böckhstraße, supplying the neighbourhood with caffeine and delicious treats from their own bakery. Once a month they host open ‚cuppings‘ for everyone who wants to learn more about their favourite fuel.

Böckhstraße 30 & Adalbertstraße 23b, Kreuzberg | Mon-Fri 8am-7pm, Sat+Sun 10am-6pm

Directions: U-Bahn station Schönleinstraße

Shakespeare & Sons

A little slice of New York in Friedrichshain: On Warschauer Straße, inside an English book shop, with the smell of freshly baked bagels in the air, you can enjoy fabulous coffee made with beans from Kreuzberg’s Bonanza Coffee Roasters. During the week, Shakespeare & Sons opens fairly early, and there’s no queue like there is at the weekends. Win-win!

Address: Warschauer Straße 74, Friedrichshain | Mon-Sat 8am-8pm, Sun 9am-8pm

Directions: U-Bahn station Frankfurter Tor
