A series of far-right terror attacks in Neukölln raises troubling questions.
In German historiography, there is often talk of continuity. Right-wing extremism is particularly rich in tradition. And here there’s a pattern: it could always rely on sympathisers in the security services in order to fester. The most disturbing example was a string of murders committed by the so-called NSU, which weren’t officially investigated for years.
You don’t need to be an Antifa activist to feel nervous in the face of what’s happening in Berlin. In Neukölln, a series of far-right terror attacks has the district anxious. 63 criminal acts have been recorded since 2016. The attack on local politician Ferat Koçak (Left party), in particular, raises questions. His car was torched, the flames almost reached his house: but the assault could have been prevented. Only now we discover that the scandal links back, once again, to the security services. How? One of the main suspect’s phone was already under surveillance. But police were told to disregard intelligence on a potential attack gained from said surveillance. We demand an investigation.
