Another Vincent: van Gogh’s still lifes in Potsdam

It’s absolutely stunning to see van Gogh’s still lifes up close. Now, some of his lesser-known works are coming to Potsdam’s Museum Barberini in a special exhibition from October 26th to February 2nd, 2020.

Masterstrokes: van Gogh’s Grapes, Lemons, Pears, and Apples is a lesson in beauty (Photo: The Art Institute of Chicago, Gift of Kate L. Brewster).

Reckon you’ve seen all the van Gogh paintings there are to see? Or perhaps you consider his still lifes a little, well, trivial? Think again. This new exhibition will teach you the ways. His entire life was a mere 37 years, and he spent just ten years of them being an artist. And then, only within the last two years of his life did the workaholic develop the bold, inimitable brushstrokes with which he redefined his field.

Van Gogh created 170 still lifes in total, and Potsdam’s Museum Barberini will show 27 of them in an extremely focused selection. Beginning with depictions of a cabbage and clogs, and ending with the colourful and intense flower paintings of the last months of his life, in 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise.

Address: van Gogh: Still Lifes at Museum Barberini, Alter Markt, Humboldtstraße 5–6, Potsdam | Wed-Mon 10am–7pm, every first Thu of the month 10am-9pm, €14/€10 concession

Directions: Potsdam main station
