BRLO: A brewery tour with a difference

If you’re anything like most people, the idea of surrounding yourself with beer and beer-related paraphernalia is highly appealing. Thankfully, there’s plenty of the stuff in Berlin: light, crisp, traditionally German — and probably brewed by geriatric monks in a remote Bavarian monastery.

But what about the future of beer? Things change. A new wave of craft beers are jostling your average Pils and Hefeweizen for chalkboard space at the city’s hip watering holes. And now, rather excitingly, we get to glimpse just how these tasty craft beers come to be, thanks to one of Berlin’s most lauded new breweries: BRLO Brwhouse.

Located at one of those U-Bahn stations you never get off at (Gleisdreieck, U1, U2), the BRLO microbrewery is assembled from 38 upcycled shipping containers and boasts brewery, bar, restaurant and beer garden. Futuristic industrial vibes and striking monochrome branding give it a unique aesthetic in a city overrun with vintage-and-concrete interiors.

In their self-styled ‚craft beer playground‘, the team proudly showcase a simple, transparent ethos and commitment to high quality, regional ingredients with group tours every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. All those nagging questions you’ve always wanted to ask about…hops, malt, hangovers*…they’ve got the answers. And, as no decent brewery tour would be complete without the consumption of said booze, the sessions conclude with a guided tasting of their signature beers (Helles, Pale Ale, German IPA, Porter, Berliner Weisse), each expertly paired with a small bite from their award-winning kitchen. Nom.
