Morning glory: Berlin’s best brunch

While Berliners aren’t known to be early birds, they are quite partial to long and lazy breakfasts and weekend brunches. Whether you prefer oysters, lavish cold cut and cheese platters, or traditional hummus dishes, our favourite brunch places will cater to all your tastes. Good morning!

Hallmann & Klee

The best-stocked pantry on Böhmischer Platz: Hallmann & Klee is a recommendation for any time of day. But we still like to come in the morning to feast on pancakes, cheese platters, the wonderful bread (also sold for takeaway!), and on their incredibly good pastries and cakes.

Address: Böhmische Straße 13, Neukölln | Wed-Sat 9.30am-10pm, Sun 9.30am-6pm

Directions: S-Bahn station Sonnenallee

Al Pasha

Hummus for breakfast? Yes, please! At Al Pasha on Sonnenallee they serve it in the traditional Syrian-Lebanese dishes Msabbah, Fatteh (with nuts and fried bread) and Foul with fresh mint, pickles and olives on the side. Do share these hearty dishes – otherwise you might need to return to bed immediately.

Address: Sonnenallee 77, Neukölln | Daily 8am-7pm

Directions: U-Bahn station Rathaus Neukölln

Allans Breakfast Club

Breakfast with wine? Sign us up! (Photo: Allans Breakfast Club and Wine Bar)

An Australian breakfast joint, run by a Frenchman in East Berlin – globalisation isn’t always bad. Also, they cure their own salmon here, which says a lot about the lovely host Allen’s ambitions. Breakfast as craft, with a poached egg on top.

Address: Rykestraße 13, Prenzlauer Berg | Mon 10am-4pm, Wed-Fri 10am-3pm, Sat+Sun 10am-6pm

Directions: M2, M5

Distrikt Coffee

Yes the weekend queues are long and yes there are other places serving brunch with an international attitude you could visit. But they’re rarely as good as here. This place in Mitte has been around for quite some time and is still worth a visit. If you like your brunch a bit closer to nature or at least a few trees, the wonderful Annelies in Kreuzberg is also run by the Distrikt Coffee crew.

Address: Bergstraße 68, Mitte | Daily 8.30am-5pm

Directions: U-Bahn station Rosenthaler Platz

This legendary establishment defies any hype, which only makes it all the more amazing. Whether it’s a luxurious hangover breakfast, a trip with the family, or a spot of celeb watching, the grand old coffee house with an Austrian accent can do it all. House of Small Wonder

Japanese breakfast that goes beyond clichés, set in the midst of a green dream world, on corporate and grey Friedrichstraße? The House of Small Wonder really is a small miracle. Equally miraculous is their French Toast, made with homemade croissants. And by the way: now they offer dinner service, too.

Address: Johannisstraße 20, Mitte | Daily 9.30am-5pm, 5.30-11pm

Directions: U-Bahn station Oranienburger Straße

Isla Coffee

Probably the first zero waste café in Berlin: Isla

The owners of Isla Coffee have strived to become a zero-waste café. And how does that taste? Amazing! Their brilliant bread pudding, for example, is made from their day-old Albatross bakery pastries, and they use leftover milk from steaming to make their own ricotta. Fans of sustainable indulgence outside of Neukölln, rejoice: their Mitte outpost on Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße is now open.

Address: Hermannstraße 37, Neukölln | Mon-Fri 8am-6pm, Sa+Sun 9am-6pm

Directions: U-Bahn station Boddinstraße

Once a month, Kreuzberg’s Markthalle Neun opens on a Sunday to feed Berliners inventive and unique breakfast dishes. Several times a year, the event will also run under a theme – don’t miss the Vinyl market, with record sellers dotted between the food stands, the Nosh-market exploring Jewish food cultures, or the Mexican market.

A hidden gem in Friedrichshain: run with Canadian verve and friendliness, this stylish haven on the outer edges of the district is famous for its luscious hot pressed sandwiches. Which taste particularly good with their homemade lemonades and followed by freshly-baked cakes and cookies.
