Foodflash: What’s new to eat in Berlin this week?

We know what’s new to eat (and drink!) in Berlin this week: fermented veggies, pies, and the best bartender of the year.

Bartender of the year

The finest bar skills in town? (Photo: Clemens Niedenthal)

Not that we care too much about awards, but Ruben Neideck being named Bartender of the Year just makes perfect sense. And us happy. He can usually be found behind the bar at the wonderful Velvet on Ganghofer Straße in Neukölln. No other bar in Berlin is as resolutely seasonal, regional, and has as great a love for vegetables.

Address: Velvet Bar, Ganghoferstraße 1, Neukölln | Wed-Sun, 8pm-open end

Directions: U-Bahn station Karl-Marx-Straße

Vegetable of the year

Olaf Schnelle’s ‘Schnelles Grünzeug’ (yes, it’s a pun in German, meaning ‘quick green stuff‘) can now be bought by mere mortals, too.

Oh, and while we’re at it — we recently found out that you can now buy Olaf Schnelle’s fermented veggies for private use, too. So who is this vegetable whisperer? Nobody less than the favourite vegetable grower of Velvet Bar and all our other favourite restaurants in town. Find the pickles at Vom Einfachen das Gute.

Address: Vom Einfachen das Gute, Invalidenstraße 155, Mitte | Tue-Sat 10am-8pm

Directions: U-Bahn station Rosenthaler Platz

Our favourite Riesling grower Peter Jakob Kühn comes to town. For a wine menu at an illustrious private dining room on Friedrichstraße. The ever-thirsty wine merchant Viniculture is behind the plan. Wines with accompanying dinner costs €89. More information and booking via [email protected]

Food of the year

Food, food, food everywhere: (Photo: Hannes Schmidt)

As we mentioned in our highlights earlier this week, Berlin Food Week is back. There’s a packed programme of events at restaurants across the city, special film screenings, cooking classes, and more. And that’s not all! The House of Food, one of the main sites of Berlin Food Week, is located at the concept mall Bikini Berlin. There, old and new brands and producers present their products. Find your old favourites and new things to eat there.

Pie of the year

What could be more autumnal than a nice sweet slice of pie? Nothing that we can think of, at least. Fortunately, Sarah Durante — best known for slinging her beautiful Southern pies and Nashville hot chicken sliders at street food markets all over Berlin — is hosting a few pie workshops this year. Learn how to make American-style, double-crust apple or pumpkin pie in her hands-on classes at cookies and cream, booking through Humble Pie’s website.

Address: cookies and cream, Kremmener Straße 8, Prenzlauer Berg | Thu, Oct 24th; Thu, Nov 7th; Wed, Nov 13th, all classes begin promptly at 7pm, prices vary

Directions: U-Bahn station Eberswalder Straße
